It is not clear that he was fired. Maybe he simply couldn't do the work anymore because of his injuries.

The article did not say he was fired. He's hospitalized and unable to perform his jobs as a maintenance worker and construction worker.......

I assume that means he was let go/fired/furloughed/ told he was not wanted.
