I may be confused. Did you call them to find out the status of your refund or was this a cold call from somebody claiming they were from the IRS?
If you called them the first thing to do is double check that the information you sent them is correct. Then see if there are any garnishments or liens that could be applied to the refund. You can check filings at the clerk of court for circuit court. Not sure about Federal filings.
Id go to the nearest office. Bring a book and take a lunch.
Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 (M-F 7-7) to ask about the status of your refund. Best time to call is midweek in the morning.

I have called 1-800-829-1040 for clients twice this week and got through to talk to a person both times. We were on hold for only 5 minutes last Monday afternoon and about 25 minutes today. The Tax Practitioner Hotline is not being answered right now but the you can get through on the main IRS phone number.
You get money back from the IRS?
