The Civil War soldiers are pushing their cannon up the hill. I have experienced it and it is chilling. And very sad. What a terrible battle that was. The worst loss of American life in a single day.
We have the annual Luminaries display at Antietam every year.
So I’m sitting there in the passenger seat, waiting in a long line to get into the battlefield to see them.
I see a movement in the side mirror and a Confederate soldier ran by the car.
But there’s no room on the shoulder, it’s like he was running in the ditch along the road but still on my level.
When we got to the entrance I asked if they had re-enactors out.
They didn’t.
I also blithely walked right past the Harper’s Ferry monk in broad daylight, heading up the stone steps to the church ruins.
Didn’t even know I’d done it until years later when someone said the are no monks there and the church is not functional.
And I don’t believe in ghosts.
