HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — This was a virtual nightmare for educators and parents.
Officials in a South Florida school district are investigating after students in an online science class were exposed to a live sex act on their screens, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
According to the newspaper, Thierry “Ted” Victor was teaching environmental science at McArthur High School in Hollywood on Sept. 2 when he saw the live video, according to a letter he sent to administrators.
As Victor viewed the Microsoft Teams video conferencing session, he said he saw a female performing oral sex on a male, according to the Sun-Sentinel, which obtained a copy of the teacher’s letter to school administrators.
“For the first few seconds, I did not recognize what I was looking at. I was frozen with fear, anger, disillusionment, confusion, and a broken spirit, all at once,” Victor wrote. “The class became chaotic in no time. Audible, yet semi-unintelligible, collages of laughter, profanities, along with several students pleading for this virtual assault to stop, caused sheer panic.'
Victor said he was so stunned, he ended his class early, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
According to his letter, Victor said did not know the identity of the girl on the screen, but said a student in his class identified her as a student in the Broward County school system. Victor added he believed two male students in his class shared the link that allowed an outsider to enter the Teams meeting.
Reached by the Sun-Sentinel, Victor declined to comment.
School administrators immediately reported the incident to the district’s information technology department and its special investigative unit, district spokesperson Kathy Koch told the newspaper. Investigators determined that the incident was not the result of hacking.
“The school’s leadership continues to investigate the matter to identify those involved and is reviewing security protocols to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future,” according to a statement from the school district. “Any student who displays inappropriate material or behavior is subject to disciplinary consequences.”

What happened is not the fault of MS Teams.
It’s the fault of an insider threat.
I chose those words on purpose.
I don’t know how old said students are. In high school, they could be anywhere from 14-19. They could look like young kids or like young adults.
I’m somewhat embittered by the fact that I had teachers that were ill-prepared to deal with the age level they were assigned. You’ve got to have some level of experience or knowledge (sophistication ?) of what a given group is capable of. One teacher I had was so incompetent at being able to control her class (this being 6th grade), that on one occasion at the end of the year, I let her know in no uncertain terms she was thoroughly unfit. She knew I was right.
In the case of this guy, it seems a similar problem with students of a level that are beyond his capability to either understand or control. Hence he might be better off teaching a lower grade where the likelihood of such an incident happening is more remote. Naïveté is not a positive trait for a teacher dealing with older students. They need to be able to anticipate and spot bad situations and handle them before they erupt. His naïveté may have, in fact, exacerbated the situation.
Drama instructor.
My take is that the teacher was truly shocked and dismayed. I would be. It is child porn even if it was done by children. Just because they’re HS students doesn’t mean they’re older. Is she 14? 15? Doesn’t matter. I perceive his reaction as that of a responsible adult that cares about the well-being of his students.

I don’t want to be too critical of him for being shocked...
He told the administration about two male students who may be responsible...He probably knows who the trouble makers are in the class...But, he did not suspect that they are capable of this kind of stuff...
You do have a different take on it than I do. It was stated that he’s not a new teacher. I don’t think he’s incompetent. I think he has a couple “bad apples”.

Agreed. I’m not naive but I certainly wouldn’t expect anything like this.
But it is happening to schools. And I know of some churches that it has happened to also.
At least two other Broward County classes have been hijacked since the school year started Aug. 19. A masked man joined an online class at West Broward High School during the first week of classes and went on a disturbing, racist video rant. A few days later, another intruder posted obscene language in a fifth grade virtual class at Parkside Elementary School.
Microsoft Teams competes with Cisco Webex Teams, most directly the part that used to be called Cisco Spark. More messaging and collaboration that you’d see with Zoom. Seems to be an improvement over Microsoft Lync, although that was supposed to have been absorbed into Skype for Buisness.
6th grade. That is about the worst grade.

LOL! That could very well be the case. Just recall how many teachers have been nailed for having sex with their students.
Agree. I’d be shocked and saddened to see a young girl debase herself by live-streaming that. It’s one thing to be intimate in private, quite another to do a volunteer porn show.

Actually, I think that in a few years this sort of thing will not be the result of a prank, but an actual part of the curriculum. The left seems to be moving in that direction, and who would dare say, “It can’t happen here”?

I’ve read that sexual activity videos are already part of the curriculum in some school jurisdictions.
I don’t want to necessarily say incompetent (as mine was). He might be exceptionally proficient in teaching his course. He just may not be in handling students of this age when sex is #1, #2, and #3 things on their minds.
