Katyusha rocket lands in vicinity of Baghdad airport
13 minutes ago

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — At least one Katyusha rocket landed in the vicinity of Baghdad International Airport on Sunday evening, according to authorities.

The Iraqi security media cell released a statement on Sunday confirming that one rocket targeted Baghdad International Airport “without causing any casualties.”

The rocket launched from the town of Abu Ghraib, which neighbors the airport, the statement added. Abu Ghraib lies approximately 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of the Iraqi capital.

The airport hosts an American military base, as well as the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center, a branch of the US embassy which has been subject to repeated rocket fire in recent years.

Rocket attacks on Baghdad’s airport and other sites of international diplomatic interest have grown increasingly frequent since the assassination of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani at Baghdad’s airport on January 3.

The US has attributed past rocket attacks on sites of international importance in the Green Zone to Iran-backed militias, who it says are looking to further inflame US-Iran tensions.

Iraqi army bases hosting US-led Coalition troops have also been the target of rocket attacks suspected to have been launched by Iran-backed militias.
