I think "Jimi Hendrix is the greatest guitarist" is just something you're supposed to say. Though he was very good, in my mind he clearly wasn't the greatest.
The next argument is which of his pieces were his best. While I like Purple Haze, his guitar playing in "Dolly Dagger Live at the Isle of Wight" is a must-hear. (the lyrics are not so good)
Maybe Danny Gatton was better.
Maybe.

You have obviously never listened to Band of Gypsys.

Yes, a 3 man band with one guitar. Live.

Same goes with listening to everyone saying the Beatles are the greatest thing ever. They sucked then, they suck now.
you are so right about you are ‘supposed” to say that....and we all know why, because he was black...i never got the whole Hendrix thing...i guess for his time he was unique, but the songs were very average and the guitar playing has aged badly...the live stuff was mostly a lot of feedback and just plain noise. Greatest player i myself ever saw and heard was Randy Rhoads...the 2 records he did with Ozzy are 40 years old, but still sound fresh and vibrant...his live playing was just astounding...
He never aged. Page, Clapton, Beck, EVH all aged.
