His voice is almost as bad as mine.He amazed me though just up there with a 12 string and a six string. I suppose the clash was how so many just showed for him and left before the main act. I wonder if the Monkees saw that with Hendrix
“Santana might disagree”
I saw Carlos at least three times late 70’s to mid 80’s. He was fine, nice solos aided by a couple pound block of brass buried into his Yamaha guitar that his tail bridge was locked into. That’s how he got his sustain. He wasn’t good as a rhythm guitarist until later in his career. (Early on he didn’t know chords)
Never saw Jimi, but have a lot of recordings.
Joe Bonamassa wasnt born yet...
Most people have not read the autopsy which included the toxicology report, nor watched the body cam videos. GF was not asphyxiated and was saying I cant breath before he was ever restrained with a knee.
Wow, maybe. Saw Gatton many times. Psyche Delly, Desperados, Bayou. Wow, bringing back memories. Not all of DC sucks, not all of it is the Swamp.
I saw a documentary on Terry awhile back on his daughter finding his main guitar. It was good.
I agree with Hendrix. Terry Kath was the best.
Ever hear of Pat Travers? Check out go for what you know.
it’s live and amazing.
A lot of listeners equate greatest guitarists with somebody whose style of guitar playing and whose music they like.
I liked some of Jimi Hendrix stuff. But regardless of his skill he produced a lot of noise and a lot of jamming that just didn’t go anywhere. And playing with his teeth? who gives a damn?
Some of my favorite guitarists, all of which are top notch. Which one is better or best? Lot of times it just depends on what I’m in the mood to listen to. What style.
Rory Gallagher
Alvin Lee
Jim McCarty (Cactus)
Clem Clemson (Humble Pie)
John Cipollina (Quicksilver Messenger Service)
Duane Allman
Dickey Betts
Glen Campbell ought to be on any virtuoso guitarist list
And here is one that most people wouldn’t think to put in this list, Leo Kottke, magical fingers.
Speaking of magic fingers: Roy Clark.
Why doesn’t demonstrate his real skill with a guitar, one of my favorite songs that Leo Kottke did was Pamela Brown, the Tom T Hall tune.
I was in love with this girl when I was 18 and I would have followed her anywhere which would have been a very bad move LOL she dumped me for a guy who was a couple years older who drove a pickup truck and listened to country music. Best thing she ever did for me. For the next seven years before I met & married my lovely wife of 43 years, I did a whole lot of stuff I never would have done if I had married her. And some of it was even good LOL. Not to mention some fine some fine (and some not so fine) ladies I would have missed out on.
Ditto
Why = while it
Sometimes the voice recognition on this Android changes words after they’re correct, usually right as I’m hitting the post button.
I once saw and heard Al DiMeola in concert. He was incredible.
Different strokes for different folks. Everyone has always been gaga about Clapton, but I have never detected the virtuosity from him that some of those you mentioned displayed.
I saw them once too and DiMeola was fantastic. That was over forty years ago but I still remember him playing.... and the drummer too. That was truly a super group.
I think post # 6 by rightwingcrazy says it best.
Just bought a new DVD.
Anacostia Delta.
It’s about Danny and Roy Buchanan.
Haven’t watched it yet, but I’m really looking forward to it.
I’m sure a great deal of the people in this thread will not agree with me, but this is kind of the way I felt about Hendrix although not as much as I do about guitarists like Eddie Van Halen:
The following is from The Good Rats’ “Tasty”
We had a flyin’ guitar man
Maybe the fastest in the land
But he was goin’ no where fast
Speed ain’t nothing without class
