Micky Dolenz recalls ill-fated Monkees tour with opening act Jimi Hendrix: ‘Yeah, it was kind of embarrassing’
Yahoo ^ | 17 Sep 2020 | Lyndsey Parker

Fifty years ago, on Sept. 18, 1970, guitar legend Jimi Hendrix died of asphyxia while intoxicated. He was only 27 years old, and his stint as a superstar lasted less than five years, but he obviously made his indelible mark — being declared by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as “arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music” and by Rolling Stone as the greatest guitarist of all time.

And one of the first mainstream rock acts to recognize Hendrix’s greatness was the Monkees. Unfortunately, the Monkees’ young fans weren’t quite as enthusiastic when that TV band’s Micky Dolenz came up with the seemingly bizarre idea to hire Hendrix as the opening act for the Monkees’ first U.S. tour in 1967.

Hendrix ended up playing only seven of that tour’s 29 dates, dropping out after having to contend nightly with thousands of nasty, impatient, jeering teenyboppers. “Yeah, it was kind of embarrassing,” Dolenz admits to Yahoo Entertainment. “Jimi would go, ‘Purple haze!’ and the kids would be like, ‘We want Davy!’ He’d go, ‘Foxy lady!’ and they’d yell, ‘We. Want. The. Monkees! We. Want. The. Monkees!’ He was coming up against that very typical opening-act dilemma for anyone touring with a big headliner, really.”

One of the more odd clashes I saw was Leo Kottke first bill with Loggins and Messina. The music worked but I saw them in Hawaii and never heard of Kottke. The whole arena was filled and the oddest thing was there were maybe 3,000 Asians and when Kottke left the stage thousand just left.

I remember there were so many vacant seats I just walked up about five rows back.

Later that week I bought a couple Kottke albums and a fan ever since( 1975)

I’ll check him out closer since you have good taste.
Any favorite songs by him?

The most technically gifted guitarist I ever saw was Al Di Meola with Chick Corea & Stanley Clarke's "Return to Forever' jazz-fusion group.

Agree completely with your post about Jimi and the Merman. It lights me up now like it did 52 years ago. Polk audio towers would probably light me up, too.)))

I know he was in Chicago, just wondering if certain songs showed his talent better than others.

All the guitarists mentioned were vituosos’, and I’m a huge fan of them all. Jimi set the bar, sorry that’s just how it is. They all had the “gift” and there are more among them not mentioned here.

His voice sounds like geese farts on a muggy day.

(Leo’s words, not mine)

Saw him in Stillwater, OK in 1972.

**Except that George Floyd and Jeffrey Epstein were murdered.**

Drugs killed George Floyd, IMO.

I don’t think the knee on the neck can kill a healthy person very easily. At least not in a matter of minutes. Floyd was certainly a bigger man than officer Chauvin, with a more muscular physique.

After laying chest down, with my head turned to the right, on an unpadded carpeted floor for a few minutes, I (66 yrs old, 6’1”, 185#) had my wife (130#) kneel on my neck, putting maybe 1/3 of her weight there for only a minute, and felt only a slight increase in difficulty breathing than before she put her knee there. And that was mostly because of the added weight on my chest. By bringing my right knee up some, my right leg was able to take some pressure off of my chest. It seemed like I could manage alright for maybe even a half hour, but not sure; I’m getting old after all. I asked her to put more pressure there, which she did momentarily, until I said, “you better stop, so this old man doesn’t have to go to the chiro”.

I watched a few reruns on ME-TV a while back.

Now I get the satire and parody.

As a kid, I didn’t care for the Monkees.

‘Make Me Smile’ is one of my all time favorites! For another great song with Terry on lead vocals check out ‘Byblos’ from 7.
