more American blood is spilled than on any other single day in the history of our Nation. Antietam
Probably the most emotionally “moving” place I’ve ever been. I’ve been there twice & the second experience was a repeat of the first. For lack of a better word, I feel “spirits” of the dead there .... it’s the only place that has ever happened to me.
Sharpsburg!
In 2012, I visited the Sharpsburg battlefield. It doesn’t seem to have changed much since 1862, unlike nearby Gettysburg, which is strewn with monuments. Even the cornfield is still a cornfield.
My great-great-great-grandfather was wounded at Antietam and fortunately for the many descendants of his daughter, including me, he survived to fight again, until the end of the war, after which he returned home to his wife and young son. He served from Sept 1862 to April 1865. His daughter, my great-great-grandmother was born in 1866, a year after his homecoming.
Thanks
