Correct - I failed to point that out. Jack Ryan is the American author that is sitting in the helmsman’s seat on the Red October. Most of the Russian crew has been put on life boats and are being rescued by a US ship as this is going on beneath the water’s surface.

The USS Dallas is also down there, but its captain is on the Red October with a couple of others that boarded her.

As well as the book by Tom Clancy with the same title. It's the only movie with Alec Baldwin I will watch. He actually did a good job playing Jack Ryan - later replaced by Harrison Ford in subsequent Clancy-based movies.
