I hear ya. I was born in the early 60s & experienced a lot of that too. Had a babysitter that smoked like a chimney. Built a treehouse and fell out of it more than a few times. Rode everywhere on my bike without a helmet. My parents usually had no idea where I was until I came home for dinner. Stood out in the rain & snow for the school bus without a chaperone.

Nostalgia aside, the fact is that the child mortality rate has fallen by a lot, even in the last 50 years (see below link). In 1970, it was 26 out of a 1000 children not making it to their 5th birthday. Today it is 7 out of 1000 - a nearly 75% decrease. I don’t know about you, but the though of the thought of infants riding in a car without a car seat makes me cringe.

So while I do think it was BETTER to be a kid back then, it is also SAFER to be a kid today. It’s up to everyone to decide if they think its worth it or not.

Nicely said. The same sort of logic could easily be applied to any of a number of current situations. Thanks.

Better because we learned to take risks which made us stronger

Safer now because mon and dad (if there is one) will take care of them until almost 30 years old which when we had already been married, had kids, served our country, bought land and built our own home, while they cower in the basement easy pickings for whatever media line the Dems dream up.

Sure, but then a bunch of Karens and their neutered mates decide that child seats until the end of puberty lest their precious little things get a boo-boo is a good thing. So we end up with laws mandating that we live the way the Karens want us to.

Then they decide its not fair that kids who work hard and excell are awarded trophies, so now everyone gets a participation award.

They decide that its sexist, misogynistic and patriarchal if we recognize a womans beauty, attractiveness or other aspect of desirability. So we get mandatory sensitivity training and whatever else they can think of.

The result of pampered children raising pampered children is the world we have today.
Where does it end?

"So while I do think it was BETTER to be a kid back then, it is also SAFER to be a kid today."

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Benjamin Franklin.

I'm not sure this actually applies in this situation, but it always sounds good... :)

Built a treehouse and fell out of it more than a few times.

I was raised in the 60's in south Dallas and built a treehouse and fell out of it about 20 feet above the ground. Landed on a role of fencing which broke my fall, but not the bones.

Ached for about three days, then climbed back up to see what I had done wrong.

Safe kids have to be taught by life how to do things. Unsafe kids learn from the school of hard knocks when they have a safety net, their loving parents, to help them stand back up.

Kids today who were raised safely are the antifa trying to fight long guns in Portland and not realizing why their chest hurts.
