ok...what you said...but where did the mass/energy needed to produce more photons come from? To my knowledge, photons are emitted as a result of molecular energy states created by electromagnetic waves in a medium. I don’t get it!

Someone has GOT to change this title. They did NOT create matter from light. They converted light into matter. Matter and Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted from one to the other. Even Hawking radiation is converting energy into matter.

If you want a black hole, this is how you get a black hole.

That's racist, not PC! It's an "absence-of-light hole". You can't call things black unless you're whatever.

A much more profound statement than previously envisioned..new slogan....Let Light Matter

I always wonder what gives these tiny blobs energy in the first place...why do atoms, all subatomic particles, and energies keep on keeping on?

Cool, I sez, whipping out my magnifying glass. Let’s make some gold!

Good luck finding enough energy to convert into gold. You'll need a massive super-nova star to do that. Lots of energy needed for creating a tiny amount of matter, and more for a heavy element like gold.

From the little I understand isn’t the current physicist belief that matter and energy just pop in and out existence ?..from where?..no one knows...not really “undestroyable”?....flame away...if you need to.

I love it when bosons mate.

“Large Hadron Collider”

Why don’t they just go all out and call it The Fat Hadron Collider?

Sure, maybe it could take up jogging and lose a few pounds.

Or maybe it could start eating salads.

Without dressing.

Not the Collider.....the salad.

Nobody wants to see a fat, naked Collider.

I think they call it that so it’s not to be confused with the desktop Hadron Collider or Mr. Hadron Collider which replaced Mr. Fusion on time traveling DeLoreans.

E=mc2 — it’s a 2-edged sword.
-

It’s an equivalence, not an equation. ‘E’ is without limitations. Like thought.

mC2 is by definition, limitations. Like reflected light from the moon.

Just steers?   You can't fatten up a young heifer just the same way in a feedlot?   I mean, is it the elimination of the testosterone or butchering them when they're young that you appreciate.

Any moving charge generates photons. They never specified where the photons came from, but the article talks about two protons colliding. I am sure that will produce abundant photons. The mass/energy is imparted to protons (protons are hadrons, the things that the LHC accelerates) by a radio frequency (RF) field inside the circular raceway. Basically the RF field is modulated so that the protons are always accelerated forward. As they move around the circle the field inside stays ahead of them. Giant magnets bend their trajectory to keep them from flying off in a straight line. It is my understanding that a single proton can achieve the same momentum as a major league fastball. When two of those collide, watch the sparks (and W bosons) fly!

Two counter rotating proton beams are generated. There is a short drift region where the passing beams coast past each other. The probability of any particular pair colliding is infinitesimal, but with enough protons, the probability of at least one pair colliding is a near certainty.

Hmmmmm, darned if I know. I'm given to understand that the testosterone, besides making bulls much harder to handle, also gives the meat a 'gamey' taste and makes it tougher, as well as slowing or preventing the fatty marbling we so enjoy.

As to fattening up heifers for the slaughter? Dunno again. Perhaps they are simply more valuable as milch cows, as long as they still are milch cows?

But this is FR, someone who actually knows will be along shortly to set us both straight...

The plutonium bomb that destroyed Nagasaki released ~ 21 kilotons of energy.

E = MC2

Solving for M, the amount of plutonium mass converted into energy was about the size of 1/3rd of a penny.
