This was my first reaction. It was suicide-by-cop so he could become a martyr for the cause. I think it is likely that he set the entire thing up that way from the very beginning.

He'll become a martyr like Jeffery Dhamer became a martyr. In other words, zero chance of him becoming a martyr.
