Hate to say this, but that could be because you were never taught the proper way to use them.
On the outside, if they fall out they're gone (and so may you be...)

On the inside, they (and you) may be recovered...

Perhaps you own a boat that one can install the plug from the outside but the boats I've owned are not designed that way...

Your boats may be inboard or stern drive; I agree an outside installation would probably work best there. Of course, a safety chain or cable should minimize plug loss when installed from outside.

Mine's a simple outboard bass boat hull. The plug can be installed either way, but the manufacturer recommends inside installation -- for the reason I gave.

Also, the heavy cover in which I fish isn't optimum for an outside installation.

The main point is proper adjustment so that the plug expands to a solid seal and strong retention fit. That's the part that some casual users seem to miss sometimes -- or they just forget to install the plug...
