In high school the guys would carry around packs of Camels or Marlboros to look like “real” badasses. We wouldn’t be caught dead with cigarettes like Virginia Slims.
Women were smoking long before Virginia Slims came along, as the pre-war Lucky Strike ad shows. Ironically, Marlboros were considered a women’s brand. Virginia Slims were just an attempt to jump on the women’s lib bandwagon.
As for snooper trucks ‘seeing’ firearms in the home from the road, I don’t think the Brits found all the ‘untaxed’ radios and TVs with their vans.
