Hall of Fame basketball coach Lute Olson, who built Arizona into a national power and guided the Wildcats to the school's only NCAA championship, has died at age 85.

Olson was hospitalized last year after suffering a stroke, and was recently moved into hospice care.

His death Thursday was confirmed by family to Arizona media outlets.

Olson went 589-187 in 24 seasons at Arizona and guided the Wildcats to four Final Four appearances, 23 consecutive NCAA tournaments and 11 Pac-10 titles, as well as the national title in 1997.

Olson’s best team might have been in his first year, the 1973-74 Long Beach State 49ers. Five players were drafted by the NBA in the first two rounds of the draft.

The team went 24-2 and lost the two games by 5 points. But the team was on probation because of Jerry Tarkanian had done in the previous years so there was no post season play. Olson left for Iowa at the end of the season.

I wonder where his team played back then...

I don’t think Pyramid was built by LBSU until later...

I did read that Olson spent many years working in California...

Long Beach State played almost all their home games at the Long Beach Arena from about 1970 to 1985.
