On ship we normally stand four hour watches with the exception of two two-hour watches referred to as the first (1600-1800) and second (1800-2000) dog watches.

The purpose of the dogging the watch is to rotate the watch schedule so that the same section doesn't always have the mid-watch (0000-0400)

Why are they called the dog watches? Because they are cur-tailed.
