(Vanity) Recommendation for Pepper Spray for Personal Protection
N/A ^ | 8/29/20 | Scouter

Does anyone have any well informed suggestions for purchasing pepper spray for personal protection? Cost is not really an issue. I'm interested in brands that are most effective, easy to use without spraying it by mistake, reliable online vendors, etc.

I got two dispensers at the traveling gun show that comes thru town, they were both the size of a bic lighter....

a quick shot in the eyes can disable just about anyone...

I gave one to my wife and I keep one in my pocket...very small and compact, you use it one time and throw it away.

Gel is supposedly superior to spray.

Gel has a very narrow stream and in law enforcement is only used in areas where dispersed spray would cause a massive disruption, such as in a hospital. No one in LE uses gel anywhere else. I always carried a can with a cone pattern. That's the most popular spray pattern.

The problem is that civilian pepper spray isn’t very effective. LE strength is much more effective, if you have access to it.

Agree, on the Sabre Red....just make sure it’s the crossfire version...that can be held/sprayed, at any angle.

Buy several small ones. Go to a local protest. Wear a MAGA hat.

Test each one. As the “volunteers” questions about effectiveness.

I am kidding.

The contents of these sprays are pretty much all the same. My advice is to go to a store and pick them up. Its the handling that matters. And the fit in your hand and the holstering is key.

The second thing to think about is what types of problems are you preparing for? Individuals? Groups? Marauding gangs blocking your way? Each situation calls for a different delivery system.

I carry a can of bear spray in my truck. It shoots about 35 feet. I figure that is what I would need in the event I was surrounded in my vehicle.

Finally, ask yourself if there are any state regulations. For example, some states require an FID-type card. Some states outlaw “mace” but allow pepper spray. If you are going to leave it in your car—who is going to be using that car besides you? Kids? Wife?

Just some things to think about

I have a can of ‘pistol grip’ guard dog for non-lethal home defense - range of 30 ft (backed by one of my firearms). Carry a can of Sabre red Pepper spray gel on my person.

No matter what you buy, also make sure to get decontamination wipes in case of accidental blow back.

I probably overpaid for this but for times when CCW of even mace isn’t allowed. Something like this is a must have accessory for a MAGA hat. Starting to look around locally for defense technic training.

Many, many years ago I worked campus security for a large university. And we were all given police-grade pepper spray. But as was usual for those times, we received absolutely no training in its use.

Well, late one evening I’m walking down a stairwell in an empty research building. And I’m thinking I should have some idea how pepper spray would affect me - just in case I had to use it, and some came back on me.

So I sprayed just a bit of it in front of me in that stairwell. Yes, it was effective. And I sure was lucky I got no calls for the next couple of hours. Because I was in the men’s room the whole time throwing water on my face.

(I sure was stupid in my 20s.)

Thanks, everyone, for all your input. These are great things to think about.

I’m interested for my own personal protection, as well as my wife and daughter for theirs.

My wife generally does not go too many places without me, except perhaps shopping, and I don’t go too many places without her. But I think it would be good for both of us to have it available at all times and in all circumstances.

My daughter, though, must drive through VERY, VERY bad neighborhoods on her way to work night shift as a nurse. She’s relatively safe once she’s on campus, but getting there is another story.

They’ve both been a bit naive about the risk to their personal safety until now. However, it became real for them when our nephew (i.e., my daughter’s cousin) was assaulted the other day in DC by BLM for refusing to raise his fist in support of BLM while he was having a meal with his girlfriend in an outdoor cafe. The video went viral. Now they get it. And now perhaps they’ll take seriously my admonition to carry pepper spray and take a self defense course. We’re in Maryland, so the chance of concealed carry is a non-starter.

I’m going to recommend it for my sons, too.
