Alas, I just got back from Ottawa a couple of weeks ago. It has grown more “frenchified” over the years. And of course Quebec is just across the river.

Right, Gymbeau. I lived there from 1979 through 1998, worked just down the street from Parliament Hill, and french was certainly spoken as often as english everywhere. But the fleur de lis was usually seen as a sign of french belligerence and closely associated with their demand for independence from the rest of Canada. With the failure of the two referendums for separation in 1980 and 1995, it surprised me to see so many fleur de lis being carried at this vaccine protest.

Maybe forced vaccinations will be the one issue that finally unites english and french Canada.
