I was able to open them once, but like you I am unable to open them any longer.
And taking a closer look that quote from the top of the story, it was not particularly well written. The sun is not shifting anywhere. As the result of the slow precession of the earths poles the angle at which the sun strikes the earth changes over time. The current point at which the earth's pole point, shifts over time, and the earth's pole/axis will, in an approximately 26,000 year cycle, move through a circle until it returns to the original position/pole star.
Precession also affects when the equinox happens. The tropical year does not match the calender year. As a result of when equinox occurs, both the tropic of cancer and capricorn shift.
Hawaii.edu article regarding movment of tropic lines
(Signs along Mexican highway showing annual change to position of the Tropic of Cancer.)
A separate issue is a report that as a result of the Fukishima earthquake there may have been a small shift in the axis of the earth. (Change in the actual pole.)
This might have resulted that story regarding the Inuit elders.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axial_precession There are other issues involving Apogee and Perigee and northern and southern winter. These, in combination when Equinox falls, are part of a longer 100,000 year cycle that affects / results in the increase of the polar ice caps. (NOT so much Human produced Carbon!) Note that the 26,000 year cycle results in the periodic Desertification of North Africa. (A desert currently...) I posted a link to that above.

If the Japanese scientists were correct and the pole shifted 1.8 meters (15 feet?) how much would that shift the actual equator? (Both poles or just one...will we wobble more?) I don't think 2300 miles...and I cant say if the location of the pole changed. Interesting story though.

the sun was setting farther north in the summer and farther south in the summer. Huh?

Thanks for your post. I wonder what each reader took away from the initial post!

You are correct and I was wool gathering.... I indicated 18 feet, or one English “perch.”
1 meter = 39”, approximately 1 yard. As you indicated 1.8 meters is about 6 feet or one Fathom! (I will stop now... :)

sorry....sets farther south on the horizon in the WINTER. Hotter in the summers and colder in the winters. Just wobbling on it axis a little bit.
