1934. All Black Federal officeholders were GOP. The first Black Dem elected, from IL-1 (with overwhelming White support and a minority of the Black vote) had been a Republican himself until he saw an opportunity to run on the Dem side. Arthur Mitchell wasn’t going to engage in race baiting as future Dems would do. Despite being the lone Black in Congress, he didn’t want to be known as “THE” Black Congressmember, but just like any other.
