He was set up in that and the only reason he was even included was just to have at least one Republican.
He might have sold out to the dems at that point to get let off, and been indebted to them ever since. That would explain a bunch (but not everything songbird-wetstart McCain did)
Now, now. McCain is one of the few Cold War aces! He got shot down in, burned up in, destroyed, crashed, or ejected from FIVE US Navy planes.
