I realize that I’ve already commented, but your comment brought to mind something that I remembered from 35 years ago when I was in the Army.

I remember being in our platoon’s office, doing some kind of maintenance on our equipment. The platoon commander was there, a young lieutenant who had a wife and a small child. I don’t remember why the conversation went the way it did, but the subject of evil ferals like the suspect in the article came up. The lieutenant commented that if someone like this scumbag ever did anything like this to his little child, he would do whatever he could to make sure that justice was served outside of the justice system.

He described in detail what he would do to the perp. I don’t remember the exact details, but I do recall that it involved electrodes, acid, a blowtorch, and having the perp’s skin removed an inch at a time, all the while assuring that the perp would live as long (and painfully) as possible.

I had respect for that lieutenant.

I understand that anger. If someone did this to my family member, well, I think all control would be lost.

But revenge is momentary and remedies nothing. It is closing the barn door when the horse is long gone. I am more concerned with the things that are letting horror like this happen in the first place. Adults that lack the maturity to handle disagreement or "being disrespected" and act out with violence because they are emotionally stunted. A media that will cover for them by not reporting the story because of politics. A prison system that will meet their every need. A judicial system that may release them someday. Politicians that foster victimhood, which starts the cycle over again.

I want to find a way to stop what happened to this child from happening at all. I just don't know what that is.

I think of the movie Law Abiding Citizen in situations like this. Not the ending, of course, but what the father does to those who murdered his family, and those who helped them escape justice.
