I have always seen the Manson Family as a microcosm of the 1960s counter culture. Motives for the murders aside, Manson belonged in prison. I’m not a Manson fan by any means but his societal critiques are sometimes pretty accurate. Here is an interview with Manson from 1984. Listen from the 5:19 mark to about the 7:06 mark. It’s a description of the dissolution of the American Family and the damage done by the counter culture to the youth of the 1960s in story form. I believe that the roots of what we see unfolding today are in the 1960s.
