Yes, like BLM showing up to collect the gentrification tax.

Exactly. This basic scenario has appealed to young 20-somethings (mostly white) of several generations now, who have then gotten slammed for supposedly racist gentrification which supposedly prices the neighborhood people out of the neighborhoods.

They're sneered at as Millennials now, used to be sneered at as "yuppies" (young urban professionals) or DINKS (double income, no kids).

Apparently I have a habit of buying older houses. Working on the third now. I keep picking away and eventually it’s done. Just like eating an Elephant—one bite at a time. Gotta keep going. It’s kind of a therapy for me. I enjoy it most of the time and gets my mind off of regular work. It’s a lot easier when there is no wife around. I don;t hear “is that all you got done?”, or “are you going to leave it like that for the rest of the week?”.

When I need a break, I work on the old Willys Truck I bought.

My daughter will hate me after I die. Unless they find a man that know how to use tools. Forget that, they will hate me.

I did a project with Tom Silva from This Old House and we talked about that.

He had just bid a refurb on a Boston home at $15,000,000.

I don’t remember if that was a show house or one his company was doing.

We spent about three days together on the project and I also spent a day on one of their sites while they were filming where I met the whole team.

Just a bunch of guys filming themselves building houses. I still have his cell number in my phone

East Wheeling is a rough ghetto. Pretty gal. She will have to lock herself in at night like the Omega Man.

No need to go all the way to WV. I’m sure she could do the same in Baltimore.

A buddy of mine is a remodeling contractor. He just bought the oldest house in the city as a flip or rent project house.

I looked at it before he bought and suggested he drop the offer by $20,000. That helped, he got it for $10000 less than he was planning to offer.

It needs a ton and a half of work. I haven’t been there since he started.

I was thinking of investing in the house with him but decided not to. It was at the point the market was way down and the upside of leaving the money in my funds outweighed the potential upside of the house flip. Plus I have no interest in being a landlord. Fix it sell it cash out (or cash into another one)

About 20 years ago I got a big stack of National Trust for Historic Preservation magazines. Looked through them and used the info to tour some local neighborhoods near where I was living in Virginia.

One day I drove through Petersburg, VA. Even then the gay couples were buying up the old ghetto Victorians for cheap and rehabing them. This is not a new game these instagram millenials are playing.

They won’t pay for them anyway.

Two months til the roof leaks, month and a half til furnace quits, 20 days til bangers bust out all the windows.

Three months til one or both tenants break a leg on the steps, eight months till both are slapped around INSIDE the house by local bangers, seven months til the craphole is boarded up.

I did this in rhe 1970s. Lots of city-dwelling artists do this. When their friends start moving in also, sharing contractors and craftsmen, they get accused of gentrification when taxes start to creep up. My advice: do the outside of the house last.

So, how come they closed (paid) for $52,500 on an $18,500 house?

My favorite on the topic is “Mr Blandings builds his dreamhouse”

I’ve seen that old movie about three times. It’s hilarious. I’d like for TCM to air it on cable, so I can watch it again.
