Ah yes, The Road to Jalabad. I remember it fondly.
I learned a lot about Afghanistan in the late 1960s. I was in the Peace Corps and trained to go there. God was looking out for me and I was ‘deselected’ two days before our group left. All but two of the 90 in our group returned after one month in country. Most with amoebic dysentery which can hang on for years.
As part of our training, we learned about Afghan customs and history. No outside power stays there long. Our 19 years might be a record in that regard. We are not going to make them better. We are not going to make them behave. We are not going to civilize them and we are not going to make Afghan men treat Afghan women better.
It is not our circus and they are not our monkeys.
All we can do is hope and pray no one is injured.
