CNN's chief media correspondent Brian Stelter may have landed himself in hot water, according to the attorney of Covington Catholic High School student Nicholas Sandmann.
Last week, Sandmann announced that The Washington Post settled the $250 million defamation lawsuit he filed over its botched coverage of a viral confrontation with a Native American elder who had portrayed the Kentucky teen as the aggressor. This followed the multimillion dollar settlement agreement CNN reached with the teenager back in January.
However, Sandmann's attorney, Lin Wood, spotted a retweet from Stelter of a tweet written by attorney Mark Zaid, who speculated about how much money the teen walked away with from the settlement.
"Those with zero legal experience (as far as I can tell) should not be conjecturing on lawsuits they know nothing about. What kind of journalism is that?" Zaid asked. "I've litigated defamation cases. [Sandmann] was undoubtedly paid nuisance value settlement & nothing more."
Wood accused the "Reliable Sources" host of breaching his network's own confidentiality agreement with his client.
"This retweet by @brianstelter may have cost him his job at @CNN. It is called breach of confidentiality agreement. Brian Stelter is a liar. I know how to deal with liars," Wood tweeted with a screenshot of Stelter's retweet.

It depends on what the settlement agreement defines as a violation of the settlement agreement and what penalties it incurs.

Why would Brian Stelter be privy to this information? It seems like only board members, top execs, and the legal team would know what the settlement was. It seems very likely they would share that info with on-air talent (and I use the term ‘talent’ loosely). Of course, Stelter could have weaseled the information out of associated staff.
Also, $25K seems too low for this nuisance suit. That’s what you’d get from your local grocery store.

Well, “technically” he was elderly and a Native American, so you see, this is not “technically” a lie.
I don’t for certain, of course. But why would he? He’s a talking head, not likely part of the CNN legal team.

Seems to me that ANY statement on the amount of the settlement by any employee of CNN constitutes a breach of the NDA.
It shouldn’t matter if the statement is right or wrong. It shouldn’t matter if the stated amount is correct to the penny, one dollar off, or millions of dollars off.
It shouldn’t matter if the CNN employee makes the statement on his own, or merely agrees with someone else’s speculation given the possibility that the CNN employee has actual insider knowledge.

Well, he does look to me like a little prick so your evaluation of him fits, but at a lower RANK than “general”.
