This was discussed at some length in Graham Hancock’s book “America Before”. You beat me to it in mentioning this.
I think the biggest thing that held back the advance of civilization was low population densities. Hunter gatherers have a good life, especially when theres not a lot of competition. When the whole world is your pantry and theres no competition life is easy so why waste your time building things you do not need or even want?
