I was at a San Francisco Giants baseball game at Candlestick Park with my son about 22 years ago. Unbeknownst to me, I bought tickets for “AIDS Quilt Day” and they unfurled that abomination before the game right in front of us on the third base line.
“Dad, what is that? Why are they showing us that?”
“Uh, they are just showing off some quilting skills by some people, son.”
I learned that day that pro sports will do anything for a buck and you need to really ask what’s going on the day you are visiting. At least back then they didn’t bring the Folsom Street homos out to prance around naked.
It’s been a long, steady slide for pro sports, but it sure has accelerated this year. I’m done with all of it.
It could have worse. I actually had tickets a few years ago for Gay Pride Day @ Fenway Park. I had bought the tickets at the beginning of the season BEFORE they decided it was homo day at Fenway. It made for an interesting game. Needless to say, I did my best NOT to drink any beer. Hence avoiding having to visit the MENS room during the game.
