I grew up on the southside of Chicago, and hung out at many of the spots where people have been killed recently and over the past several years. When I was in college I worked for awhile at a gas station which is now in a definitive shooting zone. It was already a sketchy place then, but much worse now. It was an older type of ‘gas station’, which also did mechanical service on cars, and I worked with a middle aged black guy who was a mechanic.
He lived in the projects on the near south side, near Comiskey Park - but on the ‘other side’ of the Dan Ryan. He ALWAYS carried a gun, and told me he would never get on an elevator in his building without one. He told me people would actually throw appliances (e.g. refrigerators) off of upper story balconies - trying to hit people. He was someone I respected, and was in some ways like an uncle to me - but he had to deal with a lot of s**t.
The social factors that lead to this are not simple, and they clearly haven't been figured out by the pinheads who think a liberal arts degree makes them the source of all wisdom. Solving these problems won't happen because someone read the right sociology text. It will only happen when we ALL engage with one another, throw out the political correctness, throw out ‘color’, and just work hard together to fix things.
After more years of education than I want to think about, I know that the solutions to the major problems in the world aren't going to come from eggheads, but from real people who have real experience in the real world.

“Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s administration is adding a veteran gang-outreach leader to an office she set up to curb the city’s gun violence.
Norman Livingston Kerr, a former leader of the anti-violence organization once known as Ceasefire, is set to begin Monday as violence prevention director in the mayor’s Office of Public Safety.
Kerr pointed out that, although the city’s two-year gun violence surge has subsided, the homicide rate in Chicago remains far higher than other big cities including Los Angeles and New York.
“We need to work together and drop egos,” Kerr told WBEZ. “It’s an all-hands-on-deck approach so that we can see these numbers drop and we can see more people enjoying themselves in Chicago, living longer lives.”
Kerr will report to Deputy Mayor of Public Safety Susan Lee, who was hired by Lightfoot in June after making a name for herself in Los Angeles by developing strategies against gun violence that resembled public-health campaigns.
“I’m fortunate,” Kerr said, “because we have a mayor who believes [violence] is the Number 1 issue and we have a deputy mayor who has been focused on it for a number of years and brings a lot of expertise around this issue.”
Kerr, 50, was born in Jamaica and spent much of his childhood in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood. He has a master’s in clinical social work from the University of Chicago.”

Look at the bright side, the shooting was at a funeral home. It’s quite convenient for the dearly departed.

Convenient for the undertaker and considerate to the families since they won’t have to pay transportation and handling costs to the funeral home. This is hardly news, it is the Chicago Way, every day.
