And that each one of these cells is like a miniature city in complexity with nanomachines buzzing around all over the place in a coordinated fashion driven by a survival instinct whose source is a complete mystery.

It is absolutely awe inspiring.

Yes. And those cells “decide” which way to evolve - like T-Cells. Some become “memory” cells to lie in wait for future infections (like in this article) and others become immediate soldiers. Plus all the “messenger” chemicals that are used to control what’s going on. It is absolutely mind boggling.
