If you had to pick only ONE great band or musical group of the past 50 years who would it be?

Posted on 07/10/2020 8:18:42 PM PDT by Bigtigermike

I love all kinds of music and I know everyone’s taste of music is different but if forced to pick only one group since 1970 that was awesome, encompassed uniqueness and range and just fun music overall it would be Earth Wind & Fire. I just loved how they mixed R&B, Jazz, Soul, Pop, Latin and Disco and had lyrics to many of their songs that had meaning and message. Maurice White was a genius and his instrumental arrangements for the bands top hits was bar none. Great Car music

‘That’s the Way of the World’ ‘

Fantasy’

‘Reasons’

Getaway’

‘After the Love is Gone’

‘Serpentine Fire’

‘Shining Star’

‘Can’t hide Love’

Boogie Wonderland’

‘Gratitude’....etc

My first thought was Chicago then I read Earth Wind and Fire.

They toured together for a while.

I’ve seen both live

My current obsession is Leonid and Friends

“ EWF is the only one that I know of that took a Beetles song and made it better. So there’s that”

Wilson Pickett did that with ‘hey Jude’

Lots of winners here. Maybe outside of the 50 years but I didn’t see these guys mentioned... Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Man, once you are tracking with those guys...

EWF is the only one that I know of that took a Beetles song and made it better. So there’s that

Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66 did the best version of "Fool On the Hill".

The music of BREAD was always melodious and most importantly, eminently playable on guitar.

The space organ intro and ending to their classic hit, IF, is worth listening to over and over again. No wonder it’s been covered by numerous artists!

“The power and influence of Nickelback is unmistakable, but for sheer lyrical and harmonic genius one would have to go back to Ace of Base or Hootie and the Blowfish. Hootie’s dynamic range and singular brilliance as a bassist and accordionist, and triangle player are, in short, incomparable with any modern master composer/performer, including Kevin Federline and even Spandau Ballet.”

I agree with most of your premise however, you’ve underestimated the overwhelming vocal power of The one hit wonder, Steelheart and their late eighties hit “ I’ll Never Let You Go”.

In the alternative, I would consider Blue Oyster Cult - particularly the incredible power of the cowbell in the mega hit “Don’t Fear the Reaper”.

The Eagles. They had so many hits—and all of them were understandable and subject to sing along by untrained voices while driving.

They were a combination of C&W and rock sound.

I would select Imelda May. She goes from 50's covers to modern and even Irish music. She has an awesome voice.

Much as I love the Beatles, they broke up 50 years ago.

While they did have a few songs come out in 1970, those were recorded in 1969, and Lennon never played with them after that.

Them. It’s a little extra confusing because the band’s name was the main character’s name in their rock opera, “The Wall.”
