I read a big book about Robert Maxwell about 18/20 years ago.
He was mixed up in all kinds of stuff. He was a fascinating fellow.
They thought he was killed by the Mossad on that yatch
Sidney Sheldon also wrote a work of fiction which was based in part on Robert Maxwell's life.
It's funny. At one time he was in this big battle with Rupert Murdoch over who would be the bigger media mogul.

But not unexpected. I was a WSJ subscriber at the time.

His house of cards was on the verge of collapsing. He was suing (under British law) every reporter and investigator for slander and libel that was looking behind his curtain of fraud.

When he disappeared, I thought he was faking his death to live out what remained of his "golden years" free, and not in stir.

Boston talker and paperboy, Howie Carr said that a joke on Fleet Street (London's newspaper area) going towards the end was "Not to take any 'checks' from him" (Maxwell was originally from Czechoslovakia).
