The Mississippi capital named after Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, voted on Tuesday to remove the former Southern populist's statue from the grounds of City Hall in a 5-to-1 vote.
Jackson council members decided to relocate the statue as it becomes another city forced to confront the legacies of slave-owning presidents amid a cultural shift and national reckoning triggered by the death of George Floyd, a Black man who was killed by a White police officer in Minneapolis.

Jackson Michigan claims the Republican Party began there. Ironic since Jackson is considered by some to be the first dim POTUS. If they rename the place let it be Fremont who was the first Republican nominee for President. Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Speech, Free Men, and Fremont

My high school journalism teacher used to talk about the shifting demographics and tell us when the city would be no more. I hope he sold all his real estate in time. His family owned a bunch of shopping centers on the West side of Jackson. I know he lives outside of Jackson now.

Yep. The city had potential to be the next Nashville or Atlanta. Madison, the surrounding suburb, is really taking off and have a beautiful park.
