I’m not satisfied with any explanations of how Polynesians made it to Hawaii, let along North America. We’re talking about thousands of miles of open ocean without even knowing that anything awaited them when they set out. Maybe some guys would be crazy enough to try but I doubt they would have take any women. So if they ever did reach Hawaii they would have had to go back and then return again in order to breed. It just seems beyond the realm of possibility.

There's interesting evidence that southern California's Chumash Indians built their canoes in the same way the Polynesians did. They're the only North American Indians that did so, suggesting they had contact with Polynesians at some point.
