For the first three years of our War of Independence, there was no one who came close to Benedict Arnold in terms of bravery, brilliance, perseverance, or impact in keeping the Revolution going - going despite overwhelming odds, unfathomable suffering (read about what he did in the 1775-76 Canada campaign; Wehrmacht troops at Stalingrad would have appreciated it.)
He was a Jason Bourne / Jack Reacher / Audie Murphy figure. Recovering from wounds and bearing the insults of lesser men and the Continental Congress ate his soul.
