It also reminds that evil isn’t always ugly such as orcs and such.

Evil also comes in the whispered advice (Grima Wormtongue), the lust for power as promised by the rings, etc.

Even though it isn't about America and it isn't about a Revolution per say I would recommend "Cromwell".
It is about the English Civil War and pretty much parallels our American Revolution pretty much so that some say Cromwell's War was a major influencing factor in the American Civil War.

Cromwell is a fascinating character !
Very complex man !
That period of English history is also very fascinating and an important influence on America. Many issues that period brought out we saw reemerge here during our Revolutionary period and even to this day. The different factions that formed in the parliamentary army discussing government, the rights of man, religious rights vis-à-vis personal conscience and government, his right for a voice in government we hear the echoes today. For example consider the Leveler movement.

I think the movie - Richard Harris does a good job of capturing Cromwell’s personality. The history as Hollyweird always does is distorted. Hollyweird writers always convinced they can do better drama then history!

Or that Ariel, (Sp?) is willing to assume human mortality for love.

And you always get the sense that Gandalf can solve a LOT more problems than he does, but he willingly restrains himself so that humans/elves/dwarves/Hobbits can do it for their own benefit. Sort of like the Founders envisioned governments.

Can’t believe no one has said “Gettysburg.” Beautiful film of the human tragedy in war. The agony of the Civil War without all the “omg slavery!” crap.

On the lighter side:

“One, Two, Three” — Hilarious Cold-War romp with James Cagney.

“George Washington Slept Here” — Jack Benny and Ann Sheridan; saw it recently on TCM and really liked it.

The Longest Day...

The Longest Day is the best! It's not only deeply moving, it's very artistic and has very deep and developed characters. The Germans are not just evil killing machines, but are sympathetic people with brains and reasonable motivations.

Liberty! The American Revolution (old PBS series).

There was another miniseries, which I see occasionally pop up, called Sons of Liberty

It takes place in Boston during the British occupation and centers around Sam Adams.

Absolutely. They have to solve some problems on their own...I completely see that.

Funny...I always read a lot, but when I went into the Navy, I had the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, had never read it, and on that six month cruise, I think I read it cover to cover three times.

It had never interested me before, but it bit me hard, and I began about a 30 year stretch where I read ferociously until my eyes began to give out on me. I sure do miss reading...audiobooks are great, but not the same.

That is true. Evil often has a friendly face.

I have heard plenty of people over the years who have made those types of allusions...but honestly, I never paid it much attention.

I suspected they either never read it, or were forced to read it by a teacher, so I never gave that mindset much credence.

In any case, I by no means meant that to be a blanket statement, which these comments we see make obvious-I should have said (and probably meant to) "...in some conservative circles..."
