How does this make me a jerk? I sincerely hope she gets better. Do you not find it odd someone with cancer is shopping at Pier 1 - not a grocery store or some other essential place - in the midst of a pandemic in Florida?

Because of depression. Having a serious illness causes depression. Being locked down also causes depression. Getting out and shopping is a great stress reliever.
And in a polite society, she shouldn't have to worry about being coughed on.
