Try it. I have. And several others have as well. While you are at it. Put a cheap pulse/ox meter on your finger. Breathe with a mask on, then without a mask. I’d bet your missing a bit of O2 in your body/blood with a “mask”
But by all means. If it makes you feel safer. Then do it.

Then why were the rioters spared?
The masks are to keep the wearer from coughing/breathing it out, to block water droplets from escaping your face that carry it, like covering your mouth when you sneeze but better. That’s why almost any face covering still somewhat works. It’s not necessarily to keep you from breathing in tiny viruses yourself but also helps
