My Grandfather worked a union job, and my Grandmother worked in a blouse mill, and still managed to have 4 children. Of course they grew up during the depression, and knew how to stretch a dollar.

Be fair, back then, there wasn’t as much “stuff” that you needed, outside of food, shelter and clothing. Most people still didn’t have cars, and maybe outside of the family radio, there weren’t any electric devices.
