Pure speculation, because none of us know what the real truth is/was inside SDNY. But since Berman was put there by Trump (Sessions) I’m reluctant to say he was a black hat without any data to support that claim. But it’s possible there was a difference in approach or timing - for example, Berman may have wanted to wait on Maxwell until other indictments were in place and Barr got tired of delays and told him either to speed it up or step aside. We’ll probably never know, but his cocky attitude sure went away after the 20th. There are infinite possible reasons...

In my opinion he was leveraged. I think there are many who believe they got away with things years ago that were actually recorded and stored on file. Years later, they are “needed”, they’re told what evidence was recorded etc. and told to behave or else.
Since Sessions/Trump don’t have those blackmail files and 70% of the swamp is corrupt - they sometimes end up picking someone who goes bad on them. That and I think there’s deals behind the scenes - possible they traded his assignment for something else that needed to happen. Just my 2.

Berman was not actually appointed by Trump/Sessions. A panel of judges installed him, very unusual but legal, some kind of rarely used legalism thing. IMHO Trump/Sessions knew Berman was a derp but let him stay for a while; reasons can only be speculated on. Mine:
1. Gave him a chance to see if he’d be a good boy.
2. Using him as chum to see what he does and his connnections to derpdom, sort of casting a net after throwing the chum.
3. Part of #2 would be to fool Berman and other bad guys that “nothing’s happening”.
