Good insight. Possibly an owl. I see a nautilus image, but it's possible with each facing away from one another, they are meant to represent/disguise an owl image.

I've seen -- and examined closely -- those "paired Nautilus shells flanking the 'E'" on the northern terrace of "the big house" on LSJI dozens of times -- yet never made that possible "owl eyes" connection!
