Reiner was one of the great comedians of the 20th Century. He went back to Your Show of Shows, hosted by Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca, which launched a bunch of comedy careers. He worked with Mel Brooks there and they came up with their 2000 year old man act that they performed for many years. Reiner was the straight man, but he was really good at serving up jokes for Mel.

In the pilot for what would become DVD, Reiner played the comedy writer main character. He had the good sense and humility to rework the concept bringing in Dick Van Dyke as the main character.

Yes, which allowed him to also bring in Mary Tyler Moore as Rob's TV wife. She would not have been credible as Carl Reiner's wife. Casting was A-1 except Richie.
