Interestingly enough, in 1936, James Farley, who was FDR’s Postmaster General and also his general political fixer, referred to the United States as “47 states and the Soviet of Washington.”

My Washington state home town was a logging town. Lots of “wobblies” (socialists/communist wood workers and loggers). It was also known for the brothels.

In the 1950s, it was said there were more known, registered Communists per capital than Moscow.

For both reasons it was off limits to Fort Lewis soldiers.
