A photographer has captured pictures of the modern-day Black rodeo circuit to pay homage to the untold stories of African American cowboys.
Atlanta, Georgia-based photographer Forest McMullin, 66, set out to explore the largely ignored history of Black cowboys in the United States, and during his search, he found a dedicated circuit of contemporary practitioners honoring their historical lineage.
'The history of African American cowboys and their role in settling the West has been largely ignored by historians and the media despite the fact that around 25 per cent of cowboys were African American,' he said.

25 per cent of cowboys were African American”
This claim became popular recently but I’ve never seen any research to back it up. There weren’t many blacks total in the west (census data) so I don’t know how they break out “cowboys”. Anybody know where this idea is from?
Cowboys didn’t start in the West. Not sure the percentages, but men using horses to herd and govern cross the demographic spectrum. Some of the better hands I’ve seen came out of Hawaii; another group that has a ‘rich’ history in cattle.
It’s not a Rodeo. It’s a bro’deo. BLM
There are quite a few black cowboys today. Some compete in the regular rodeos and the black rodeos. There is an Indian circuit also. The black rodeos do let whites compete. My son used to team rope with a bunch of black guys and rodeoed with them. Folks that live the western life style tend to be fairly conservative.
To the BLM crowd, and the rest of the anarchists, no history is important, and the black men who participated in the past, and those that still participate in the rodeo, cattle herding, etc., are sell-outs, Uncle Toms, and not really black. It makes me sick that many blacks don't know or care about their own history, but are ready to destroy everybody else's history.
Yes, I know. I’m just asking about the demographic claim.
I stuns me they ruined a mans life over standard cowboy humor.
The photographer claims it’s been ignored - I guess he hasn’t heard of the cowboy museum in OKC.
They spent Juneteenth showing pics from their vast collection.
Leon Coffey has been the headliner rodeo clown at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo for over 20 years - a crown favorite. He had to be 60 or older last time I saw him and was amazingly athletic.
No caballeros?
Never heard of buffalo soldiers either...
I guess at best most folks blacks only had a mule.
Festus rode a gol dang mule!
Census data from the 19th century was pretty simple. Caballeros were mostly classified as white. The other choices were black, Indian and Chinese in 1880. The extremely racist/ethnic census didn’t start until the 1980’s.
And quite frankly, horses are not indigenous to the Americas, so how did the cowboy become the icon of America?
Hell, the Polish taught us to ride horses, it is how the cavalry was born in America
***I stuns me they ruined a mans life over standard cowboy humor.***
I first saw that clown act back in 1968. It has been a staple of rodeos for years, until Obama, then it was declared racist, even though all the other Presidents had their turn fighting the bull.
