If the gold belonged to someone involved in some sort of criminal activity, they might be inclined to let it go, and write it off as a cost of doing business. Otherwise the alternative could be to be in legal trouble for the criminal activity for which the gold was related to.

I would think the owner is long since dead do in part to their own criminality and others being aware of the gold.
