Buying a firearm in California is different than doing the same in Texas. Besides the background check, you have to take a course on gun safety and assuming you pass, you have to wait 10 days to pick up your firearm. You also have to pay a fee and pass a background check to buy ammo.

It's really difficult to obtain a permit to conceal carry in CA. If you buy a firearm for self defense in CA, it's essentially for home defense.
