There are polls that matter. Those are the polls done by each party, and candidate. They know exactly where they stand.
Example. Hillary knew she specifically had trouble in PA, MI, and WI. She campaigned there in her waning days of the campaign. And she knew days before the election, she was going to lose, and cancelled the fireworks show she had planned for her victory. They know.

Well, I will agree with that. There are polls which are meant for public consumption and polls which are used internally to assess their position. But I think a lot of people, especially on the conservative side, have nothing but disdain for polls and pollsters, and either will not talk to them or lie. The internal polling has to be accurate, and I wonder what they do to get around the “unfaithful pollee” problem.
