Swam, waded, and played in the Detroit River with plenty of cuts and scrapes. Another story, though: my Dad grew up in Austro-Hungary, later Serbia before Yugoslavia in the 20’s and 30’s. He had a brother die of tetanus and a sister of an infection from cutting her foot on corn stubble. He hated seeing us kids shoeless.
It always has.
I don’t know when you were a kid, but my girlfriend’s near death anaphylaxis was over 50 years ago.
Medical science.
Medicine has advanced so much that people who would have died from allergies now can be saved. This has gone on for quite awhile so those folks have passed on their genes and there are now a couple of generations of people who have bad allergies and are still passing this trait on to their offspring to this day.
Nature would take away those with defective genes so as not to pass it on to the herd.
Washington Ave Miami Beach but I was 5- 8 years old:-)
I actually believe 10 seconds is more like it! It's funny, but that is the way I raised my twin daughters and they are two of the biggest "germophobes" you have ever seen! I have been teaching microbiology for almost 40 years and routinely deal with pathogenic organisms. In fact, today I subcultured, among others, my Neisseria gonorrhoeae and my Neisseria meningitidis. You can tell from the names what diseases they cause. I certainly did not wear a mask or gloves while doing so because I am properly trained in aseptic technique.
I wholeheartedly agree that the overuse of hand sanitizers when you have no indication that you have had any unusual exposure will result in the elimination of the normal flora that is beneficial in keeping down the growth of more serious skin pathogens. It is also important that doctors not prescribe antibiotics unless the patient has a bacterial infection that has been verified by growing the organism in a culture taken from the patient and then tested against known concentrations of antibiotics to see which specific one to use. Failure to do so results in the development of resistant bacteria just as the overuse of penicillin led to the development of Staphylococcus aureus that was resistant not only to penicillin, but to the "miracle drug" methicillin!
I worked construction and was sick a few times....the Mexicans were never sick....I think it was the hot peppers they eat...these peppers were of the chart hot..
.
A docmentary about Polio “The Polio Crusade” expressed one of the reasons Polio suddenly became an epidemic was because of modern sanitation and food prevented exposure of babies to many diseases WHILE they still had immunity agents which they got from their mothers.
They would at a later age get exposed when those natural immunities were gone and they had not built up their own.

Getting Dirty and Being Exposed to Germs Boost Your Health=My parenting philosophy
Old Wives Tale: Unless a kid eats a peck of dirt by the time he is three, he will be sickly his whole life! Age of three might be wrong but concept is correct!
My personal opinion: All of the sani-wipes and such in use, tend to get rid of the weak strains and allow the stronger more hazardous ones more room to expand and contaminate.
Ahh, I see I have a kindred spirit! Glad to know there are a few of us! I say 5 seconds just so that the somewhat squeamish become less so, but your 10 second rule is fine with me. I could go even longer in most homes these days, Lots longer. The Jamaica train station still makes me uneasy. If I can smell it, I dont need to swab it. Oh, yes, aseptic technique is an old steadfast friend from my lab days. Like riding a bike.
...heard the same thing...
Be a new-age hypochondriac like millions of asshats and watch what happens in one generation.
Some at FR will live to see it and it will make Spanish Flu look minor in comparison.
Taste like candy but it snot

better than Opa Locka
Do you where PACE high school was?
Bill O’Reilly was a teacher there.
At one time Opa Locks wasn’t that bad. However, over the years it has declined.
Not sure where Pace HS was/is but as USCG flight crew in the Mia region, after hours our beer patrol youtes were regulars at the WreckBar aka Castaways on N Miami bch and Oh’reilly was a bouncer there.
We are the same age
