Met Police have imposed a curfew on Black Lives Matter activists who are expected to march in London today amid an increasingly rancorous national debate over the proper place of statues with links to Britain’s colonial past — and despite warnings from Boris Johnson not to break social distancing rules.
Senior police officers have warned that any violence “will not be tolerated” amid fears of clashes with pro-statue protesters who are also due to gather in the capital to defend” monuments.
BLM has already canceled a planned march in Hyde Park this afternoon over fears it would result in clashes with far-right groups but the police said several protests are still scheduled in the capital, with a strict curfew of 5 pm.
Thousands also gathered in Trafalgar Square yesterday (in) defiance of Boris Johnson’s order to stay away from protests that break social distancing rules, and have been “sadly hijacked by extremists intent on violence”.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has also come under fire for boarding up the capital’s statues, including Winston Churchill, to protect them from protesters — in a move that critics say is bending to “mob rule” after protesters in Bristol last weekend tore down a statues of slave owner Edward Colston.
In an attempt to avoid a repeat of last week’s violent clashes with police, protesters have today been told they must stick to the planned route that will run from Hyde Park to Whitehall and not be allowed into Parliament Square.
Police fear they could potentially face a “perfect storm” of people looking to defend the statues alongside football hooligans from the Democratic Football Lads Alliance and far-right group Britain First.
